What to Check Before Opening a Slot
Two games can use similar artwork and reel layouts but have very different mathematical profiles. Three figures are particularly useful when deciding what to open next.
RTP
RTP, or Return to Player, is the theoretical percentage of stakes a game is designed to return over a very large number of rounds. A 96% RTP does not mean that £96 comes back from every £100 played. Results over a single session can be very different.
Some slots are also released in several RTP configurations. That means the same game may not always use exactly the same percentage, depending on the version available.
Volatility
Volatility describes the general pattern in which payouts are distributed. Low-volatility slots are generally designed around smaller, more frequent payouts. High-volatility games tend to concentrate more of their return into less frequent payouts with higher potential values.
There is no universal volatility scale used by every provider. Labels such as Low, Medium and High are therefore better treated as comparative indicators rather than exact measurements.
Max Win
Max win shows the highest advertised payout a slot can produce, commonly expressed as a multiple of the stake, such as 5,000x or 10,000x.
It describes the upper limit, not the chance of reaching it. A large maximum win should never be interpreted as a prediction of what will happen during normal play.
